Ocean Springs Upper Elementary Home of the Greyhounds

Ms. Ashley Parker » E.L.A

Welcome to Ms. Parker's E.L.A class.
Thank you for visiting my website.  My primary method of communication are newsletters through email, Remind and Class Dojo.  Information is sent via these methods weekly. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me directly using the “Send email” link on the left.
We will be using I-Ready Reading to drive the curriculum, as well as thematic writing units that will align with both the reading and writing standards mandated for 5th grade.
I-Ready will also be our form of collecting diagnostic data to enhance each individual student's educational path. Please use the link below to allow your students to practice I-READY at home. We require 45 minutes a week in Reading I Ready.
Also, 20-30 minutes of novel reading is required each night. Please initial your student's agenda to show that they are reading each night.

Reading Project

If you are not participating in the Reading Fair, you will need to complete a project to present in class. It should mimic the Reading Fair on a smaller scale. You will use the component list attached to display the book of your choice. Some options for displaying this information are:
  • a file folder to display the components and decorate it to look like the book.
  • a shoe box diorama to recreate a  scene of the book.
  • a smaller tri-fold board to display the components. (similar to submitting into the Reading Fair.)

The students received their first GIST and ARTICLE to be completed at home this week. It is due this Friday. They are to read the article, highlight the who, what, when, where, why, and how and then make complete sentences to answer #2 on the GIST FORM. Then summarize their findings in close to 20 words in paragraph form.

Change in Spirit Week attire:

Dr. Coleman has decided that all the elementary schools should have the same dress-up days during homecoming week.
Here are the updated days.

Tuesday- Favorite Team shirt/jersey Day
Wednesday- Cowboy/Cowgirl Day
Thursday- Crazy Socks or Crazy Hair Day
Friday- Blue/Grey Day

We are sending home 3 IMPORTANT documents in your student's Tuesday Folder:
*MAAP Scores for ELA
*MAAP Scores for MATH
(These are the scores for their end of the year assessments last year.)
* I-Ready Diagnostic for READING.
(These assessments indicate your student's current performance level for ELA)
Please email me if you have any questions!

Homecoming Week Dress Up Days:

September 3-7:

My goal is to teach each student how to create daily routines that will set them on the path to success.
