Clubs & Activities
Gardening: Gardening is a healthy, fun activity. Students in the Gardening Club will develop new skills and learn about science and nature from growing their own food. There is a variety of interesting activities students will be involved in, such as planting, watering, mulching, weeding, and cooking. This club’s goal is to enhance life skills such as self-confidence, discovery, responsibility, health/fitness, nutrition and team building. Membership is limited to 20 members and is open for 4-6th grade students. Members will meet in Room 206 on Mondays from 2:25 – 3:25. (Leaders: Mrs. McKee; Partnerships: HOSA and Mississippi State Extension).
Steam”ers”: Membership is limited to 30 students. Members will meet every other Monday in a lab TBA. Girls join a sisterhood of supportive peers to learn and use engineering concepts to change the world. Through fun and interactive curriculum, Steamer girls will learn the engineering and math of simple machines to more complex systems. Steam”ers” will cultivate a community where girls are encouraged to pursue various careers in the STEM field. (Leaders: Mrs. Morales, Ms. M. Glass, and Mrs. Grant).
Student Leadership: Students will apply in the Spring and receive teacher recommendation to be selected for this position. Students will meet weekly and address student body issues with school Administration. If your child is interested they can speak to their homeroom teacher and ask for an application in the Spring for the following school year. This year’s student leadership has already been selected and is hard at work already. (Leaders: Mrs. Rentrop, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Beck).
Chess: To teach students to enjoy the game of chess, improve their chess skills, and develop skills in logical and analytical thinking. Membership is limited to 30 students. Players will meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month in Lab 150. Check the appropriate level below. (Leaders: Mrs. Hurt and Mr. Clark)
Beach Club: To address the needs of self-esteem and self-worth using biblical principles. Beach Club is open to grades 4-6 and meets on scheduled Tuesdays (schedule will be provided). (Leader: Mrs. Holaday/Faculty Liaison Mrs. Phillips/Mr. Wilson)
Volleyball Club: Starts in October. Open to 6th Grade Girls only to learn Volleyball skills and prepare for Middle School organized sport. Participants will work on skills, listen to guest speakers and learn the rules and fundamentals of the game. (Leaders: Mr. Q and Coach Vick)
Honor Choir: Honor choir is a club that is selected through an audition system. Mrs. Winders and Mr. John Felt select students that request to audition to learn choir pieces for performances held two times during the year. Members will meet in room 202 on Tuesdays from 2:25-3:30. (Leaders: Mrs. Winders and Mr. Felt).
Soccer Club: STARTING IN OCTOBER: OSUE Soccer Club is open to grades 4-6 and will meet starting in October on Wednesday afternoons 1-2 times per month. No cleats, shin guards, or other equipment is required. The OSUE Soccer Club is intended for new or recreational players only, so please do not apply if your child currently competes on a USYS D1/D2 or US Club competitive team. Science Olympiad ($10.00 fee): Science Olympiad is a team competition in which students compete in 23 events pertaining to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). They will compete in regional competition (on a Saturday in late Feb or early Mar) to qualify for state competition (a Fri in late Mar) to qualify for national competition (TBA). Membership is limited to 30 students and 5th and 6th grade students only. Students will have to try out to be on the competition team of 15 members and 2 alternates. All other members will be ranked and fill spots if necessary. Members will meet on Mondays in room 306 until 3:30. (Leader: Mrs. Stebly; Sponsor: Mrs. R. Cartwright).
Drama Club ($30 fee): To teach the fundamentals of the performing arts; both on and off stage. There will be two major performances over the school year (Christmas and Spring). Drama club is only open to 6th grade students. This club requires a time commitment so only serious inquiries please. Membership will require passing through two levels of tryouts. Drama will meet every Thursday until 4:00 pm in the auditorium. Space is limited.
